AU REVOIR TO 2007

And so we bid adeu to another year. Before I begin to wax poetic on the possibilities the New Year brings I must share the last few projects I’ve completed to round out the end of this year.

The stars must have been aligned just right this year because I found myself a few weeks before Christmas with all my gifts made or bought and no new projects to do! With delicious anticipation I went for my idea book where I sketch out concepts for future projects.

One of my sketches was for a cute tunic-length, empire-waist jumper that I had been dying to try to make. I gathered up some long-forgotten yarn and went to work fashioning this garment I had seen in a clothing catalogue. Because I had been seeing so many awesome sweaters in stores this season with knitted cables I decided to try my hand at crocheted ones.

Unfortunately you can not see the cables in the pictures, but the straps, top edge and empire-waist band are all cabled. The bust section was done in a solid stitch and the bottom was done in a variation of a shell stitch.

In the interest of further experimentation I tried a different technique for increasing on the lower portion- each third row I went up one hook size. The effect was exactly what I had hoped for- the shells got bigger and the skirt section tapered out gradually.

After finishing the jumper I decided to try my hand at some embroidery.

When I was young my dad taught me how to embroider and cross stitch, but I hadn’t done either in a very long time. Fortunately I had the perfect project to showcase some decorative stitching in mind.

Every day on my way to work I pass by a bridal shop that displays their dresses in the front window. Recently one of the wedding dresses in the store was displayed with a beautiful wide satin belt that reminded me of an obi belt- the belts worn over traditional Japanese kimonos.

So I cut some cotton fabric into a wide sash-like belt and traced a Celtic knot pattern onto it with a fabric pen. Using a stem stitch I followed the traced lines, working the pattern along the top and bottom of the belt.

Next I ironed on some interfacing on both the front and back pieces of the belt before sewing them together.

Lastly I added a wide ribbon to tie the belt closed.

You’d think that after two projects finished I wouldn’t have time to do anything else before the holidays, but I found myself on Christmas Eve looking for a quickie project. I dug out one of my lonely skeins of yarn and threw together a ¾ length shrug using the same mop head stitch I used to make a shawl for my mother. Incredibly it used almost exactly a whole skein and although it’s a tad cold outside for only a ¾ length shrug it will sure come in handy this spring.

Now Begins The Holiday Hangover

Being poor, it made sense to create as many handcrafted gifts as I could for all my peeps this year. Naturally most of them were knits, as that’s my current and most driving addiction.

It worked out fairly well, as I was able to crank out quite a few things for a modest but more personalized and meaningful holiday (I hope). Of course, going this direction was also very educational and satisfying, and the hours of extra practice haven’t hurt either.

I began making them way back last Spring but the past couple of months were at times almost non-stop knitting. Imagine a shadowed figure hunched over skeins of yarn grasping a blur of needles, red-eyed, kink-necked, and contorted with obsession (or possession). That was me.

The loot:

Gloves and wristwarmers were the theme this year. Even afore-ranted-about cutesy mittens were in the mix! “Never say never”, right? These were irresistible, though, being an Avatar fan:

Airbender mittens for my baby nephew.

As you can see, I’ve been up to my neck in a kaleidoscope of color. I managed to slip in a couple things of black or gray to keep some of my gloominess intact, but the brightness abounds.

Whew! With all that said and done, now it’s back to the cave to nurse my holiday hangover while planning darker creations.

Day 1: So It Begins: The Holiday Frenzy Of Craft Corruptions, Advent Calendar Style!

You may want to put the kiddies to bed before viewing, folks, as the most beloved of holiday icons portrayed here are neither jolly nor nice!

This has been a long time coming, but Lyzard and I have been biding our time and scheming for our first all-out crafty subversion fest o’ fun. After all, there is no better time of the year to be inspired into this sort of thing. Kitschy crafts abound during the holiday season: jovial Santas, grinning snowmen, and all things cute and nice.

Our dark natures insist on balance, so we’ve created a countdown to Christmas that’s sure to satisfy our twisted side and allay any compulsions to snap and go on a rampage armed with black paint to deface all that is rosy-cheeked.

And yes, we fully expect to find coal in our stockings this year.

Welcome to the first installment of:

Disentombment of the Month

December’s disentombment has arrived early. You must have been very good this year.

A search through our various stashes, piles, and catacombs reveals many timeworn tokens of our artistic pasts. Some are pretty good, some are agonizingly bad, and some are just plain freaky! Still, we can't help but find amusement in their exhumation.

Death of Salad Man

Welcome to Photoshop 101. A time before Quickmask, filters, and color correction. A chapter introducing the concept of layers by organizing pictures of fruit and vegetables into a face. “Salad Man”.

Fellow computer art school alums, you may remember this!

Merely rearranging given elements was a bit too stifling for me, so I tried to make things a little more interesting. In the end it had to be the “Death of Salad Man”, which I enthusiastically displayed as my final for that chapter.

Having time to kill, I also created “Angry Chef”:

and “Melon Brando” (who was never completely finished):

A forewarning; you will be seeing many more of my old Photoshop projects, as they are so terrible. Funny. Terribly funny.
