I very much doubt that any readers I may have garnered since this blog began will remember one of my original rants, but those who know me personally will probably recall how much I have railed against granny squares in the past. To me granny squares are really just tiny windows into the soul of every garish, bulky, acrylic nightmare that twists itself off some well-meaning crocheter’s hook. (Not to say I haven’t made a few acrylic abominations myself… but those were all in the past, of course.) One of my biggest pet peeves are those ubiquitous granny square blankets that have graced many a living room couch with their day-glow-orange and vomit-green color schemes. Those horrid blankets and throws that are just too precious to be destroyed in the backyard BBQ pit because some much-loved personage has slaved over the rainbow abomination for months. Really, I can’t stand those. Really, REALLY, can’t stand them. I really, REALLY, REALLY want to melt them down into puddles of toxic ooze.
That, my friends, is what I used to think of granny squares…
…And now, I must eat my words…
For this Christmas I received a wonder of a book. Seriously, I haven’t been this excited about a crochet pattern book since I got my very first awe-inspiring book Stitch and Bitch: The Happy Hooker years ago. This book is better. Much better. Oodles and oodles better! If you didn’t get it for Christmas then get out those gift cards and snap one up! The book I speak of is: Blueprint Crochet by Robyn Chachula. Great for hookers like me who are a bit beyond most of the easier patterns out there and are looking for something more of an intermediate challenge. But I digress…
My real point here (as if I haven’t already completely muddled it) is that I have discovered a new and exciting world of exquisite granny squares. Yes, you read that right… I found a granny square I actually like!
Yeah, I know it surprised the hell out of me too! But check this project out:
